Cultural Acculturation


Cultural acculturation is the meeting of two different and unified cultures so that they are accepted by both parties. However, even though the two cultures are united, cultural acculturation does not then make the identity of each of these cultures disappear. The two cultures that have merged are still easy to identify.



Cultural Assimilation

Cultural assimilation refers to the process in which a minority group or culture assumes the behaviors, values, rituals, and beliefs of their host nation’s majority group.



What is the Difference between Assimilation and Acculturation?


In addition to assimilation, you can also find acculturation in various types of culture in Indonesia.Acculturation is the mixing of one's own culture and foreign cultures in various fields, such as culinary, dressing, and so on.What is the difference between assimilation and acculturation?

The difference between assimilation and acculturation is the emergence of a new culture or not.Assimilation often produces a new culture because of the fusion of two different cultures.Meanwhile, acculturation is the mixing of cultures without losing the original culture.


The following are examples of cultural acculturation in Indonesia which are quite well known:


Menara Kudus

Menara Kudus is a cultural acculturation that brings together Islamic and Hindu cultures. The holy tower has a function as a mosque, but its architecture resembles a temple building in Hinduism.



Candi Borobudur

Borobudur is one of the wonders of the world that is owned by Indonesia. Borobudur Temple was also the result of cultural acculturation. Borobudur Temple combines two cultures, namely Buddhist culture and the Magelang community. The temple is used for Buddhist worship, while the reliefs of the life of the Magelang people.

 Wayang

Wayang is a type of art that is famous and recognized by many people. However, wayang is also a cultural product. Wayang combines two cultures, namely Javanese and Indian culture. Javanese culture is reflected in the names of figures and Indian culture is reflected in stories taken from the Ramayana and Mahabharata.


Kaligrafi

Next up is calligraphy. Calligraphy is a type of Islamic art that can be found in many places. However, this calligraphy is a cultural acculturation that combines two cultures, namely Islam and Indonesia. Islamic culture is reflected in the written verses of the Qur'an, while Indonesian culture can be seen from the various forms that exist in calligraphy.

Dangdut music which is an assimilation of Malay and Indian culture
